WHAT IS HUMAN API AND WHY SHOULD I CARE?

| April 30, 2020

Carriers frequently need medical records to fully evaluate the medical history of your client which is typically done through mail, fax or email retrieval from providers which often takes weeks to complete. Currently, many medical offices are closed or have limited hours due to COVID-19 so getting full medical files is now especially difficult.  Human API can speed up this process.

WHAT IS HUMAN API?

Human API is a service that is being utilized by several of our carriers that enables your clients to share their digital health records with the insurance carrier directly from their provider’s patient portal.  A ‘patient portal’ is a secure site where providers store records related to medical visits and test results.  The records contained in a portal are typically abridged but frequently contain enough data for underwriting purposes.

THE PROCESS:

If the carrier determines that medical records are necessary, a secure link is emailed to your client.  The link along with detailed instructions is either sent by the carrier or can be forwarded by you.  Your client will only need to enter name, date of birth and email addresses.  They will then search for their provider and enter their username or password to send the records to the carrier.   The system will guide them if they forget their credentials or do not have an account.  They will also have an opportunity to receive a copy for their records.   The process typically only takes a few minutes.

WHY YOU SHOULD CARE ABOUT THIS SYSTEM?

  1. The whole process involves only about ten minutes of your client’s time but can avoid getting the full medical file from a doctor in the traditional manner which can take weeks.
  2. If your client had routine labs done within the past year some carriers will accept those results in lieu of paramedic labs. This is especially true for younger ages and lower face amounts.  Your client will be pleased to avoid interaction with a paramed with the current environment
  3. Portals often contain records from hospitals which are typically slower than doctor office in providing records.
  4. No special authorizations are needed since the client is directing the records to be sent to the carrier.
